In a video that’s prompted outrage across Britain, including stern words from David Cameron, a 20-year-old student is pictured on the ground after his jaw was broken in a knifepoint attack. Rioters help him up in what appears to be a good Samaritan act—until they proceed to unzip his bag and steal his things. "On the mean streets of London, even the good Samaritans are bandits," writes Giles Fraser for the BBC of the Monday night attack on Asyraf Haziq.
Some 1,700 of those "bandits" have now been arrested throughout Britain, with 600 charged in London over violence, looting, and disorder, the AP reports. Courts stayed open for the second night in a row to deal with the suspects, with Mayor Boris Johnson calling for “significant sentences.” A 22-year-old man was arrested today, suspected of murdering a 68-year-old who took a stand against rioters. The victim was one of four reported deaths in the riots; three others were hit by a car while trying to protect local businesses, the Telegraph reports.
