(Newser) – Gwyneth Paltrow: actress, singer, chef, gangsta rapper, and ... unlikely 9/11 hero? For one woman, yes. On the Morton Report, Lara Lundstrom Clarke recounts her chance encounter with the actress on the morning of September 11, 2001. Lundstrom Clarke was jaywalking across 7th street to catch her train when a Mercedes SUV nearly ran her down. After it "screeched to a halt," Lundstrom Clarke looked in and noticed the driver: Paltrow, who lived down the street.

Lundstrom Clarke made it to the subway station unscathed, but her near-death experience had caused her to miss her train. "At that time I was annoyed at everything that had made me late that day, including Gwyneth Paltrow," she says. Of course, that changed as she exited the subway to see the first plane hit the World Trade Center, where she worked on the 77th floor. She has since written a letter of thanks to Paltrow—who, through her publicist, confirms the story to People. (She is "deeply moved" by the tale, her rep notes.)
