(Newser) – The most important parking garage in American history has joined the list of Washington DC-area tourist attractions. A historical marker has been placed in front of the suburban parking garage where Washington Post reporter Bob Woodward met the anonymous "Deep Throat," receiving information that brought the Watergate scandal to light and brought down the Nixon presidency.

"It's a garage that people have been walking by, driving into, for years, and little do they know that right there on the third floor below grade was probably one of the most amazing events in the mid-20th century," a preservation official tells the Los Angeles Times. Woodward kept his source secret until former FBI second-in-command Mark Felt unmasked himself in 2005. Felt, who set up the covert meetings used tactics he had learned hunting Nazi spies in World War II, died in 2008.
