Class of 2015 Could Have Been Fathered by Ferris

And more fun facts from the Beloit College Mindset List

(Newser) – If you want to feel old, just take a look at the annual Beloit College Mindset List, meant to get inside the heads of each year’s incoming college freshmen. For example, this year’s list points out that the class of 2015, born in 1993, has never not had access to the Internet. More:

  • Ferris Bueller is old enough to be their dad.
  • Andre the Giant and River Phoenix have always been dead.
  • To them, “LBJ” could very well mean “LeBron James.”

  • OJ Simpson is more well-known as a murder suspect than as an athlete.
  • Dial-up? What’s dial-up?
  • They never saw Britney, Justin, or Christina as Mouseketeers.
  • Forget Michael Jordan, it’s all about Shaq and Kobe.
  • Break-ups no longer need to be done in person or over the phone, thanks to texting and Facebook.
  • “PC” refers more often to “personal computer” than “politically correct.”

Most of these "unknowns" my kids do know about even if they are smack in the middle of this age group. As parents we speak with our kids about these past events and issues often, especially the social and historical events. Not just what happened but the why and what it was like before.  What we did before cell phones,  ipod, internet, laptops and email. What encyclopedias, phone modems, and card catalogue are and why we had them. I actually have a list of movies that I plan for my children to watch just so they understand these "mindsets" of the past and some just because some movies were so awesome they need to see them to know it isn't all junk like most movies now. My kids are Star Wars fans because of the original movies they saw first and not from the new moviess, comic books or video games. It does give the new works more meaning to them as well. Bonus: they were really shocked by the whole "I am your father" thing.  If you don't know where you came from, how can you know where you are going?

I'm confused. Ferris came out in 1986. He must have been 15/16 so could have had kids aged 4 at that time + 14 years - by my reckoning this means that somewhere around the class of 2004 were the first to be young enough to be Ferris' kids. The class of 2015 are young enough to be his Grandkids!!!
