Holder: No 'Credible Threats' for 9/11

Attorney general says government will remain watchful

(Newser) – For years each Sept. 11 brought warnings of heightened terrorist threats on the grim anniversary. But, thankfully, not this year. US Attorney General Eric Holder said yesterday that there have been no credible threats of terrorism against the US for next week, reports Reuters. "We don't have any credible, specific allegations of activity or threats of any kind of activity on Sept. 11," said Holder. Nevertheless, he added: "We are being vigilant with regard to what is out there. We are prepared to respond to anything that we see."

(NEWSER) - Al-Qaeda today is mostly a spent force, unable to carry out another 9/11-style attack, said US intelligence officials yesterday, reports Reuters . The mostly anonymous assessment—in a conference call led by Robert Cardillo, deputy director of US national intelligence—came one year after the killing of Osama bin Laden , with security experts also noting that al-Qaeda had been diminished by the Arab Spring around the Middle East. Bloomberg: Minority Surveillance Like Checking for Measles

Muslims have accused NYPD of racial profiling

(NEWSER) - The NYPD's increased undercover surveillance of Muslims and ethnic minorities since 9/11 is like screening children for measles, said Mayor Michael Bloomberg yesterday. "If there is a community where the crime rate is very high, to not put more cops in that community is ridiculous," said the mayor in an interview. "If you want to look for cases of measles, you'll find a lot more of them among young people. That's not targeting young people to go see whether they have measles or not." Several Muslim civil rights groups and a New York congresswoman have urged the Department of Justice to investigate the NYPD for what they see as racial profiling. The NYPD Intelligence Division maintains a list of 28 countries that, along with "American Black Muslim," it considers to be "ancestries of interest," an AP investigation has found. More»
