(Newser) – Forget lap dancing at the local strip joint: British bridegrooms, brides and their wedding parties are descending on Eastern European capitals for cheap, drunken bachelor and bachelorette binges that last a week or more, the Journal reports. They're lured by low-cost air fares and rock-bottom prices on booze, but it's their bad behavior that sets them apart.

Citizens of Estonia, Lithuania, Slovakia and elsewhere are horrified to find inebriated Britons, long notorious for their rowdy behavior at soccer matches, staggering around in Borat swimsuits and bright green wigs, wrestling each other in the street. One Estonian official seems slightly befuddled by the Brits' behavior. In Estonia, he says, "if we drink, we don't make so much noise."

(USER SUBMITTED) - A 20-year-old woman is the first person ever banned from buying or drinking alcohol anywhere in England or Wales. The police issued Laura Hall a Drinking Banning Order, which prohibits her from entering bars, pubs, clubs, or other establishments that sell alcohol. If she does, she risks a $3,800 fine. Police say they're just trying to help. "We want to rehabilitate her rather than send her straight to jail, and hope the banning order will help Laura address her problems," said a police spokesman. Authorities hope to prevent deaths by boosting prices

(NEWSER) - British authorities plan to as much as double the price of cheap alcohol to battle the nation's skyrocketing problem of binge drinking. The innovative scheme is intended to help prevent thousands of deaths and hospital admissions every year, according to government officials. A levy may be imposed on the alcohol industry to prevent companies from making windfall profits off of the new prices. (NEWSER) - Gordon Brown today rejected controversial proposals from Britain’s top medical officer to establish minimum prices for alcohol, the Guardian reports. The PM said he would protect the “sensible majority of moderate drinkers” after a report advised doubling prices to combat binge drinking. In Scotland, however, the regional government is preparing to introduce a floor for alcohol prices—the first in Europe to do so. More»
