Ahh, Gwyneth Paltrow: It seems every time she does something relatable, she immediately goes and ruins it. But could she, finally, be on the road to a permanently less pretentious image? The promo posters for her new movie Contagion, out tomorrow, seem to indicate the answer is yes. While everyone else on the posters is depicted in a “Terrified Glamour Shot,” Gwyneth has full-on “gross Death Face,” complete with “bug-eyes, visible sweat, and maybe a hint of a floppy tongue,” writes Amanda Dobbins in New York.

It’s ugly, it’s humiliating, it’s decidedly un-Gwyneth—and it’s probably a brilliant move, Dobbins continues. Lately, the actress has been bending over backward trying to prove she “has a sense of humor about herself” (think Glee, country music, and of course, gangsta rap). It’s no secret that Gwyn “is a divisive personality,” often seeming “too perfect, or too snooty, or both.” Now she appears to be doing what she can to turn that image around. “And even if her enthusiasm is calculated, does it matter?” Dobbins concludes. “Gwyneth lovers can appreciate her willingness to go gross,” while the haters can simply enjoy watching her very, very ugly death.
