NASA Clip Shows 9/11 From Space

Smoke rises from New York in ISS video

(Newser) – As the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks approaches, NASA has provided a stunning new look at the tragedy—which was visible all the way from the International Space Station. American astronaut Frank Culbertson and two Russians were orbiting the earth in the ISS when they caught video of smoke rising from New York, the Huffington Post reports. “It was like seeing a wound in the side of your country,” Culbertson said.

“We took video as the second tower was collapsing. I didn't know exactly what was happening, but I knew it was really bad because there was a big cloud of debris covering Manhattan," he said. "The dichotomy of being on a spacecraft dedicated to improving life on the earth and watching life being destroyed by such willful, terrible acts is jolting to the psyche, no matter who you are." Click through for more from Culbertson, including a video interview.

How are spacecrafts dedicated to improving life on earth?  Can someone list the improvements we've enjoyed as a result of the trillions spent?
