(Newser) – Five years after Mel Gibson derailed his career with a DUI arrest and infamous anti-Semitic rant, the actor's attempt at returning to the Hollywood pantheon has taken a rather ironic turn: Gibson will produce a movie about one of the greatest Jewish warriors of all time, Judah Maccabee, reports Deadline. From a script by Basic Instinct scribe Joe Eszterhas, the Warner Bros. movie will tell the story of the man who led the famous revolt in the second century BCE against the Seleucid Empire, giving us Hanukkah.

I know he's not the most disciplined editor.  This thing better not be 8 hours long.

Albert Einstein, a Jew, said no one can read the gospels without feeling the actual presence of Jesus.  He further said that His personality pulsates in every word.  That no myth is filled with such life.  I for one am with Professor Einstein.  I believe that Mel Gibson is also.  Can we please stop trying to second guess this most talented man?  He has put his very soul in every work he has done.  Yes, he is human, like all the rest of us.  Human weaknesses and all, I can't wait to see his next work.

That is pretty lame Gibson. I guess he has tried everything else: 1) Pretending like nothing happened with Apocolypto, 2) Trying to soften his image with quirkiness in "The Beaver". Now there's nothing left except sycophancy. "Ah, it's a mitzvah! That Gibson has always been a real mensch. Look at the beautiful film he did celebrating our history!" I can just picture Gibson doing the press on this talking about the deep respect he has always had for the history and the people.  I'm not saying the guy is a monster, just that this is a little over the top.
