Manhunt on Tap After Massive Guinness Heist

Beer bandit stole 450 kegs from landmark Dublin brewery

(Newser) – Taking the "My Goodness My Guinness" slogan quite literally, a thief stole 450 kegs from the landmark Dublin brewery today, the AP reports. Irish police say the thief entered by truck and took off with a trailer packed with kegs, the biggest theft in Guinness history. The kegs contained Guinness, Budweiser and Carlsberg beers totaling 39,600 pints, or $235,000 worth.

Pubs often purchase stolen alcohol to get around high taxes, customs agents said, but police feel such a large quantity would be difficult to sell unnoticed unless the thief is linked to a criminal pub network. Truckloads of alcohol have been stolen in the Irish countryside in the past, but today's incident in the capital is more brazen by far.

Each keg holds about 88 British-sized pints (equivalent to 20 ounces each) for a total theft that amounts to about 39,600 pints with a retail value exceeding $235,000.
