The Name's Bonds, Barry Bonds

Posted Nov 29, 07 3:54 PM CST in Sports Arts & Living

(Newser) – HBO is planning a movie about the recently indicted Barry Bonds, to be written and directed by Ron Shelton—the man responsible for Bull Durham, Tin Cup, and White Man Can't Jump. HBO has acquired the rights to the nonfiction book Game of Shadows, which detailed the unfolding scandal over Bonds and performance-enhancing drugs.

Bonds will be portrayed as a talented player who, after seeing Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa's 1998 slugfest, turned to drugs, Variety reports. Shelton will co-write the script with Tin Cup collaborator John Norville as soon as the Hollywood writers' strike ends. Bonds is currently facing perjury charges for lying under oath to a grand jury.
