Stanford Considers Co-Ed Rooms

(Newser) – Stanford students want co-ed dorm rooms, and the administration may take them up on the idea. "It's not about sex," one student told the San Jose Mercury News, but about feeling "comfortable in your living space." Transgender students started the initiative to build on the school's anti-discrimination policies, but now both gay and straight students have rallied behind the idea.

"Why shouldn't I have this option?" asked a heterosexual female student. A male student says he detests the locker-room machismo of male rooms and would be more comfortable with girls. Stanford wouldn't be the first: CalTech, Dartmouth, and NYU have made the switch, though others, including Duke, have rejected the idea. No word yet from Stanford parents, the News notes.
