Bill Gates Richest American Again

His $59B tops Warren Buffett's $39B

(Newser) – Forbes is out with its annual ranking of the richest Americans, with some familiar names up top. Highlights from the magazine and MSNBC:

Bill Gates, $59 billion
Warren Buffett, $39 billion
Larry Ellison (Oracle), $33 billion
(tie) Charles Koch, $25 billion
(tie) David Koch, $25 billion

The top 10 is rounded out by three members of Sam Walton's Walmart clan, along with George Soros at No. 7 ($22 billion) and casino mogul Sheldon Anderson at No. 8 ($21.5 billion)
Mark Zuckerberg is No. 14 ($17.5 billion); that puts him ahead of Google's Larry Page and Sergey Brin, who are tied at No. 15 ($16.7 billion each). Other notables near the top include Michael Bloomberg at No. 12 ($19.5 billion) and Amazon's Jeff Bezos at No. 13 ($19.1 billion).
The cumulative wealth of the 400 richest Americans rose 13% to $1.53 trillion.

The 71-year-old Slim, now worth an estimated $74 billion, widened the gap with No. 2 Bill Gates thanks to some canny business moves last year, including heavy investment in mining, Reuters notes. Warren Buffett, Louis Vuitton chief Bernard Arnault, and Oracle's Larry Ellison round out the top 5 of the world's estimated 1,210 billionaires, who have a combined net worth of some $4.5 trillion. (NEWSER) - Warren Buffett’s plea for raised taxes seems to have caused a chain reaction: A French group followed suit , and the head of Ferrari said he should pay more. A group of wealthy Germans is the latest to seek higher rates, the Guardian reports. The 50-member alliance has asked Chancellor Angela Merkel to “stop the gap between rich and poor getting even bigger”—even though “none of us are in Buffett's or Bettencourt's league,” notes the group’s founder, referring to France’s richest woman. Americans Gave More to Charity Last Year

But the $290B we ponied up in 2010 is still below 2007 levels

(NEWSER) - Charitable giving increased last year as the economy improved, rising 3.8% to $290.89 billion, up from $280.3 billion in 2009. "There was a lot more optimism, all relative, in 2010," says an analyst. "People are still generous despite uncertainty, despite not having jobs, and despite confusion about what the future holds." But "if giving continues at this two or three percent (growth) level, it's going to take us a while to get back to where we were before." More»
