  2. Washington-Arlington-Alexandria: 33.9 minutes
  3. Poughkeepsie-Newburgh-Middleton: 31.9 minutes
  4. Chicago-Joliet-Naperville: 30.7 minutes
  5. Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario: 30.6 minutes
  6. Atlanta-Sandy Springs, Marietta: 30.3 minutes

This is funny - I've been living in NYC for little over a year and just today, I had my first semi-pleasant commute, wherein I was able to find a seat on the subway, thereby avoiding getting jostled in a hostile crowd of angry straphangers. It was not the norm - most days, my commute blows so much I sometimes lose my will to live.

This list is way off... commutes in LA can take an hour to go 4 or 5 miles. Commutes in Miami, similar.  I moved away from those areas to avoid the crushing commutes. At least in some of the metropolitan areas mentioned you can sit on a train or bus and either get work done or listen to/read books or enjoy music.  If you have to drive, the only solace is music, recorded books or podcasts, all under stressful conditions.

I left the Big Shitty (San Diego) and it's 45 minute/15 mile commutes over a decade ago.  I'll never live in a big city again.  Where I live now, rush hour really only last an hour.
