Depp: Sorry for Comparing Photo Shoots to Rape

Plus: six other stars who have used the word insensitively

(Newser) – Johnny Depp really stepped in it in a recent Vanity Fair interview, when he compared photo shoots to rape. "Well, you just feel like you’re being raped somehow," he said. "Raped … It feels like a kind of weird—just weird, man." Anti-rape activists, of course, were not amused. "While photos may feel at times intrusive, being photographed in no way compares to rape," a spokesperson for the Rape Abuse and Incest National Network tells Radar. Depp also got called out on blogs. But he was quick to apologize in a statement today, admitting to his "poor choice of words."

The Huffington Post has his full apology—and The Frisky has six more celebrities who have used the word "rape" less-than-sensitively:

  • Kristen Stewart: Once said that when she looks at paparazzi photos, she feels like she's "looking at someone being raped."
  • Khloe Kardashian: Compared a TSA pat-down to being raped in public.
  • Ashley Judd: Wrote in her memoir about the "rape culture" of rap and hip-hop music.

Its a figure of speech. Just like how 'gay' is often used for other meanings. Besides, how would you feel if people with cameras followed you EVERYWHERE you go. Sure its part of the job, but seriously. The word rape sounds quite appropriate to me.

It's deeply unhealthy to create a taboo around discussing rape. All these people are doing is making it harder for victims to talk about their ordeals.
