(Newser) – It has to be the quirkiest stop on the Holy Land pilgrimage: The Elvis Inn, near Jerusalem, where impersonators will converge Jan. 8 for the annual celebration of the King's birthday. With a life-sized statue near the gas pumps and 1,720 pictures of Elvis inside, the diner 6,000 miles from Memphis has become a shrine and tourist destination, the Commercial Appeal reports.

The site of a deadly 1980 bombing, the 35-year-old inn has suffered from escalating tensions, and the wall dividing Israel and the West Bank has complicated things immeasurably; one Palestinian cook's 20-minute walk to work has become a 2-hour commute by car. One impersonator says if Elvis were back, “He'd try to make peace between the Israelis and the Arabs once and for all.”

Counts date back to time as mayor of Jerusalem

(NEWSER) - Things got worse for Ehud Olmert today, as the former Israeli prime minister was indicted on charges related to bribes he allegedly took back when he was mayor of Jerusalem. Olmert is already on trial for three unrelated counts, but the new charges are the most serious: He’s accused of taking hundreds of thousands of dollars to facilitate the construction of a massive Jerusalem housing complex widely known as "the monster," the New York Times reports. Groups calls opposition over push for sex segregation a 'spiritual Holocaust'

(NEWSER) - Israelis are fuming after an ultra-Orthodox group dressed in concentration camp garb to protest their treatment by the public for promoting segregation of the sexes. Thousands of the extremists gathered in Jerusalem with their children dressed in the striped black-and-white uniforms of Jews imprisoned in World War II. They were protesting protests against them, launched last week after grown men of the group jeered and spit on young school girls for failing to dress more "modestly." They're pushing for segregation of genders in Israel, and calling for men and women to walk on opposite sides of the streets. More»

Israel Frees Another 550 Palestinians

Release follows clash at internment compound

(NEWSER) - Israel has set free another 550 Palestinian prisoners, completing the deal that secured the release of captured soldier Gilad Shalit . Thousands gathered at the former home of Yasser Arafat to celebrate alongside Palestinian officials. Most prisoners were directed to the West Bank; some 41 were sent to Gaza, and a handful were released to east Jerusalem and Jordan. The International Red Cross assisted in the operation, Israel said. The process, however, didn't go entirely smoothly, CNN reports. More»

Panetta to Israel: 'Just Get to the Damn Table'

Defense Secretary says military action should be 'last resort, not the first'

(NEWSER) - Leon Panetta delivered a harsh rebuke to Israel yesterday, saying that it needed to take steps to end its increasing isolation in the Middle East—starting with reviving peace talks with the Palestinians. “Just get to the damn table,” Panetta said at a pro-Israel forum in Washington, according to Reuters . “The problem right now is we can’t get ‘em to the damn table, to at least sit down and begin to discuss their differences.” More»
