Safeway Arrests Pregnant Mom Over A $5 Sandwich

(User Submitted) – When Nicole Leszczynski forgot to pay for a sandwich she was snacking on while grocery shopping, she never expected what happened next. Leszczynski, who is 30 weeks pregnant, and her husband were detained, arrested, charged, and had their 2 year old daughter turned over to Child Protective Services when they went through the register and paid for $50 worth of groceries but forgot to give the wrappers to the cashier to ring in.

The manager of the store was called, and even though they tried to pay for their purchase, elected to instead call the police and have them charged with theft. The pair, who were forced to turn over their child to the authorities, were booked and released on $50 bail each. While they weren't able to get their daughter back until the next day, Safeway permitted them to get their groceries that night along with banning them from the store for a year.

According to the article, the couple is charged with fourth-degree theft, a petty misdemeanor, and has a court date on Nov. 28. Safeway's corporate division is investigating.
