It looks like Santa is getting one less cookie on his plate this year. Due to a shortage of peanuts being harvested this season, the cost of peanut-related goods such as peanut butter and the Halloween staple, Reese's Cups, is set to rise up to 40%.
The intensely hot summer and multiple droughts in the peanut growing areas of the US caused the beloved legume to wither and die off in record numbers this year. Consumers are already seeing the price jump while shopping. The fallout is expected to last until the harvest of 2012, in hopes that they have more success than they are currently experiencing.
