Tower Heist Gets the Job Done

Ben Stiller, Eddie Murphy star in Brett Ratner film

(Newser) – Tower Heist is a recession comedy, telling the story of a group of men stealing their own money back from a rich swindler. Critics say it’s worth a watch:

“Here is a comedy that doesn't go heavy on the excremental, the masturbatory, and symphonies of four-letter words. It's funny in an innocent screwball kind of way,” writes Roger Ebert in the Chicago Sun-Times.

Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy star in “the kinds of roles they both do best,” notes Betsy Sharkey in the Los Angeles Times. “Their face-off in the front seat of an out-of-control car is worth the price of admission.”
It’s a “middlingly well-done evocation of the big-budget caper you remember with vague fondness from long-ago matinees at the mall,” writes Dana Stevens at Slate, and its "populist" bent is "cathartic."
Steven Rea recalls the flick less fondly in the Philadelphia Inquirer. “Now I'm especially anxious for the economy to right itself. Otherwise, more movies like Tower Heist are going to be made.”

Dark Shadows Has Charm, No Substance

Johnny Depp stars in Tim Burton film

(NEWSER) - Critics aren't thrilled with Tim Burton's latest offering, inspired by the late-1960s cult TV show of the same name and starring Johnny Depp as an 18th-century vampire who is buried alive, only to be accidentally dug up in 1972. The film isn't sure what it wants to be:

Dark Shadows "tries to serve too many masters," writes Joe Neumaier in the New York Daily News . "Initially it’s an epic valentine to the show. Then it’s a vamp-out-of-water story. Soon it’s a gung-ho comedy. Finally it's a monster flick." Still, it "unearths enough fun."

Critics Agree: Avengers a Blast

(NEWSER) - Sure, it's an effective moneymaking scheme: release movies about individual superheroes, then one about all of them. But with Joss Whedon at the helm, The Avengers really works. What critics are saying:
