Muslims See Hypocrisy on Hate Speech

(Newser) – After radio host Michael Savage took potshots at Islam, the relatively muted response has left Muslim Americans with a question: Where's the outrage? A handful of advertisers have pulled out, but the reaction is nowhere near as strong as it was, say, when Don Imus made an anti-black slur, the Christian Science Monitor notes. Savage is not alone voicing anti-Muslim sentiments, and many see a double standard at play.

 “There's a much greater public level of acceptance of denigrating Muslims,” one advocate said. Anti-Islam sentiment is rising in the US, with unfavorable opinions of Muslims up to 35% from 29% in 2002, according to a Pew poll. The situation echoes the bias against Japanese Americans during WWII, said a prof at Northeastern.
