Tomorrow Is Nigel Tufnel Day

Holiday for Spinal Tap goes all the way up to 11

(Newser) – Spinal Tap fans, turn up your amps: Tomorrow is Nigel Tufnel Day. Last year, one hardcore Tap devotee chose 11/11/11 as the perfect day to celebrate the 1984 mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap. In one classic scene, guitarist Tufnel informs the filmmaker (Rob Reiner) that his amplifiers have extra power because they go up to 11, rather than 10. “It’s one louder,” says Tufnel, played by Christopher Guest.

Superfan Michael Fennelly’s Facebook page for the event drew some 12,000 fans within days last year, the Huffington Post reports. “There is a certain beauty to the perfect stupidity of Spinal Tap,” says Fennelly, a musician himself. “So much of what happens in the movie is true that many musicians feel pangs while watching it because basically your whole career is mocked.” Apparently the movie made The Edge and Eddie Van Halen cry. Click through to learn how fans—and the band—are celebrating Nigel Tufnel Day.
