(Newser) – Apparently, going after a video game character wasn’t the only publicity stunt this week: Now PETA has petitioned Turkey, Texas, to rename itself … wait for it … "Tofurky." Of course, the change would just be for Thanksgiving, explains the animal rights group in a letter to the mayor, adding, "If you agree to adopt this moniker for just one day, we'd be happy to provide a delicious, healthy vegan holiday feast for all the town's residents."

The letter goes on to describe Tofurky as "a savory, flavorful, ‘meaty’ vegan entrée with wild-rice and bread-crumb stuffing that is 100% cruelty-free," whereas most real turkey meat is the product of factory farms. Locals, however, were not convinced. "I think it's about the stupidest thing I've ever heard,” one tells ConnectAmarillo.com. City officials reportedly turned PETA down, meaning they will not be enjoying "mashed potatoes (made with vegan margarine)" or "vegan apple pie topped with vanilla dairy-free ice cream." PETA is insignificant. Jesus accomplished more during his time on earth.

i doubt it would have diminished the respected name of Turkey to in good nature partake in a day of foolishness...it could showcase improvement in the quality of what might be next generation agricultural products...for sure i ll have turkey next thursday...but i wish they would have said yes...id bet some of the food would be excellent...not likely all of it...but some of it definitely
