Two police officers in Albuquerque are out of jobs after a surveillance tape surfaced showing a suspect on the ground getting kicked about a dozen times, including some shots to the head. The officers celebrated with a "belly bump" afterward, reports the Albuquerque Journal. The newspaper posted the video on its website this week after requesting it via public records. The officers had been cleared initially, but the chief ordered a second review and fired them both yesterday.

The officers had pulled the suspect over, but he sped from the scene, crashed, then fled on foot into a parking garage, where the officers caught him. The officer who did the kicking said he feared the suspect had a gun, and he had to be sure his partner got the cuffs on. It turned out the man wasn't armed, but a gun was found in his truck. The now-retired police official who first cleared the pair insists they were not out of line given the suspect's long criminal history, and he accused the chief of caving to political pressure. Head to the Journal website to see the video. A YouTube clip in the gallery at left has portions of it from a local news report. (More Albuquerque stories.)
