The USCG ended the voyages of 2 fishing vessels for multiple safety violations in separate incidents Tuesday, 11/22/11.
A boarding team from the 87' CG Cutter Tiger Shark, homeported in Newport, R.I., boarded the 40-foot fishing vessel Sea Raven four miles east of Cape Pogue in Nantucket, Mass., and noted that there was not enough required safety gear to operate the vessel outside of the 3-nautical mile line bordering federal waters.
The Tiger Shark's crew escorted the Edgartown, Mass., based fishing vessel to state waters off Martha's Vineyard, Mass.
A boarding team from the 110' CG Cutter Tybee, homeported in Woods Hole, Mass., noted that there was inadequate safety gear aboard a 78-foot Jaime Mae and terminated their voyage approximately 13 miles east of Long Branch, N.J.
A boatcrew from Station Manasquan Inlet, N.J., escorted the vessel to its home port of Point Pleasant, N.J.
"These guys are our fellow mariners and that's why we do these boardings," said Lt. Joe Klinker, 1st Coast Guard District public affairs officer. "As the winter weather approaches, and the busy season demands catch, these 'little' issues can mean the difference between life and death." Read the full article.
