Gorilla Death Stymies Zoo Workers

Baby in Lincoln Park Zoo had no visible wounds

(Newser) – The death of a 9-day-old baby gorilla at Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago has left authorities scratching their heads, the Christian Science Monitor reports. Yesterday, first-time mom Bana carried her baby's lifeless body to the zoo's gorilla enclosure, but zoo officials couldn't spot any serious wounds. "There are no bite marks or cuts and no sign of aggression, but it is possible she may have been dropped or even sat on," says a zoo spokesperson.

But life among gorillas can be dangerous. Last year, one family scuffle led to a baby gorilla losing part of a leg in Louisville, Kentucky. Earlier this year, an infant gorilla in London died during a group fight after a new male entered the group. In the wild, most gorilla infanticides happen when the dominant male dies, forcing moms to seek protection before another male murders her baby. As for Bana, zoo workers let her hold her baby for a few hours "to make peace with what happened." (For another ape story, read about the death of a chain-smoking chimp.)

Authorities have suggested a virus may be to blame for the at least 877 dolphin deaths since February, and starvation may be behind the more than 1,500 bird deaths in the same time frame, but some scientists think offshore oil exploration, biotoxins, or pesticides could be contributing. Escaped Gorilla Bites Buffalo Zookeeper

Worker escapes to other gorillas' enclosure

(NEWSER) - A quick-thinking Buffalo zookeeper locked herself in with a female gorilla and her newborn after being attacked by an escaped 400-pound silverback male. The 24-year-old gorilla, which had escaped through an unsecured door, remained in an area closed to the public. It was tranquilized by a zoo worker using a blow dart before being dragged back to its enclosure by members of a SWAT team, reports the Buffalo News . More»

177 dolphins beached in past month

(NEWSER) - Over the past month, 177 dolphins have stranded themselves on Cape Cod , nearly five times the average of a typical full year, and 124 of those have died. As researchers struggle to understand what's behind the mass beachings, the International Fund for Animal Welfare works to help the dolphins whenever a new group is stranded. The AP relates the group's most recent efforts, when a group of 11 was found beached in a remote inlet. Rescuers had to walk through treacherous muck to get to them, and found one already dead. Herring appear on New Year's Eve then vanish

(NEWSER) - First more dead blackbirds in Arkansas, now dead herring in Norway. Tens of thousands of fish blanketed the beach in Kvaenes, a town located north of the Arctic Circle, on New Year's Eve, reports the AP . A marine researcher speculates that they were forced ashore in a bid to escape predators, or died in a big Christmas Day storm. And just as locals began to debate how they would remove the approximately 20 tons of dead fish before the creatures began to decay, they disappeared.
