Australian police confiscate about 60 seedlings

(User Submitted) – Australian police are calling it a pot prank. Someone apparently planted dozens of marijuana plants in the front garden of the Bellingen Court House in New South Wales. Police sniffed it out after people started calling in the plant sightings, reports ninemsn of Australia. Authorities found and confiscated about 60 seedlings. A police spokesman says they believe it was "a joke." No arrests have been made. (Click for another unusual pot story ... this one in Nebraska.)

(NEWSER) - What a find: After receiving a tip yesterday, Harbor Patrol agents in California pulled about 160 bales of marijuana from the ocean off the coast of Orange County. That's more than 7,263 pounds, and agents say the street value is $3.6 million, CBS 2 reports. The marijuana, which was floating at least 15 miles off shore with no boat in sight, was turned over to US Border Patrol. The investigation into how exactly it got there is continuing, the Orange County Register reports. A Border Patrol rep calls the situation an odd one, noting that bales are usually dumped by boats that are being chased. More»

The Lancet found that 15% of Aussies and Kiwis ages 15-64 used some form of marijuana in 2009, as opposed to 11% of North Americans, and just 2.5% of people in Asia. Prom Cut Short Over Bad Pot Brownies

Four students got kind of a harsh buzz

(NEWSER) - The pot brownies that got passed around at a Massachusetts high school's junior prom did not agree with everyone. Four students got "violently ill" at the event last week, WCVB Boston reports, causing the dance to be cut short. Police don't know exactly how the students got their hands on the marijuana-laced goodies, but say between 11 and 20 teens ate them before boarding a bus to a New Hampshire country club Friday. Up from 5% of teens who used pot 20+ times a month in 2008

(NEWSER) - Teens' use of hard drugs like cocaine and meth has stabilized recently, but more are smoking marijuana—and more frequently. A new report finds that 9% teens smoked pot 20 or more times per month in 2011, up from 5% in 2008. "Parents are talking about cocaine and heroin, things that scare them," says the president of The Partnership at Drugfree.org, which ran the survey. "Parents are not talking about prescription drugs and marijuana," and though use of the former is slowing, it still remains high. More»

Dutch Judge: Pot Tourism Ban Goes Live on Tuesday

Coffee shop owners plan to appeal

(NEWSER) - Sorry, tourists, but it looks like the Netherlands is remaining firm on a ban that will prevent foreigners from buying pot in its famous cannabis cafes. A judge upheld the new law, due to go into effect in three southern provinces on May 1 and throughout the country by the end of the year, after it was opposed by café owners who argued it discriminated against foreigners. Others fear the ban will simply lead to an increase in street dealing. The group of coffee shop owners plans to appeal and may eventually take the case to the European Court of Human Rights, the BBC reports. More»
