Two Players Suspended for PED Buys

Posted Dec 7, 07 4:00 AM CST in Sports

(Newser) – Baltimore's Jay Gibbons and Kansas City's recently signed José Guillén were publicly given 15-day suspensions for having acquired HGH and steroids; Commissioner Bud Selig passed the sentences despite any positive drug tests from either player. Instead, documentary evidence indicates they received shipments after baseball's drug rules went into effect, in Guillén's case over $19,000 worth.

The players union counsel said Guillén planned to appeal; Gibbons, however, will not. He explained: "I have no excuses and bear sole responsibility for my decisions. Years ago, I relied on the advice of a doctor ... and had only intended to help speed my recovery from my injuries and surgeries.”
