Common Supplements Have 'Roids

(Newser) – An English lab, commissioned by an American consumer advocacy group, found small amounts of steroids in 13 of 52 athletic supplements. The study tested supplements that are legal, widely available, and commonly taken by high school athletes and workout junkies. Six of 52 also had the illegal steroid precursor androstenedione, made infamous by Mark McGwire.

The director of Informed-Choice, the group that commissioned the study, explained that the inclusion of steroids generally comes from improperly cleaned equipment or other manufacturing gaffe, not the conscious decision of the maker. Added the lab CEO: "We were very surprised by these results."

    Player Agents Referred Clients to Steroid Doc Federal authorities unsealed an indictment yesterday that charges Dr. Ramon Scruggs and two associates with illegally prescribing performance-enhancing drugs to MLB players. One assertion made in the indictment is that players’ agents referred them to Scruggs, though no agents are named.
