Outside groups supposedly not affiliated with the GOP are spending millions in Ohio to defeat liberal, Obama supporting Sherrod Brown because they see him as an "important target" in next year's elections, reports Amanda Terkel on Huffpo. Ohio's 34-year-old State Treasurer Josh Mandel (R) has announced he will seek to unseat Sherrod. Mandel is plagued with legal and ethical problems.
Nearly $3 million has poured in from big spenders including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the 60 Plus Association, Crossroads GPS, and Concerned Women for America Legislative Action Committee, according to a Senate Democratic campaign source. Sherrod's race is the only one targeted by Plus 60. Brown has a strong populist record; the Washington Post has compared him to "something of a modern-day Paul Wellstone," referring Minnesota's progressive, anti-war senator who was killed with his family in a mysterious air crash shortly after voting against the Iraq invasion.
Outside spending during the 2010 election cycle surged after the Supreme Court's Citizens United ruling, allowing more corporate influence in politics. Crossroads GPS and the Chamber are not required to disclose their donors. Read the full article.
