New Source of WiFi: Japanese Vending Machines

(Newser) – Want some WiFi with that soda? A Japanese soft drink company has unveiled new vending machines that offer a free wireless Internet signal, TechCrunch reports. Users needn't register or even shell out for a drink: They can simply connect to the public signal for 30 minutes, landing on a home screen with information on local attractions. Asahi will install 1,000 of the machines across Japan next year, with hopes of setting up another 9,000 over the next five years.

(NEWSER) - Police near Tokyo were stumped about how to go about finding the home of a lost parakeet—until the bird opened his mouth and told them his address, reports AFP . Kroger opens kiosk-style store on Ohio Northern University campus

(NEWSER) - There's a new Kroger on the Ohio Northern University campus, but you can't enter it—because it's a vending machine. The Kroger Shop24 Kiosk, which opened last month, is about the size of a bus stop and includes 164 items, from milk and bread to toiletries and flowers, all priced the same as they would be at a regular Kroger. The refrigerated kiosk gets restocked each day, and the selection of items is changed often—particularly when a special event like the Super Bowl calls for chicken wings to be stocked. More»

Wendy's Return to Japan Marked by ... a $16 Burger

(NEWSER) - For two years, Japan's fast-food lovers were forced to go without Wendy's. Now the chain is back—with a bang. Its first new store to open in the country will serve up the Foie Gras Rossini Burger, which, yes, is topped with foie gras and costs 1,280 yen, or around $16. The Tokyo store will also serve a Truffle and Porcini Grilled Chicken Sandwich and a wasabi-avocado burger, reports the Wall Street Journal .
