(Newser) – Apple's lead designer has a new title: Knight Commander of the British Empire. Or just Sir Jonathan if you like. Jonathan Ive has been awarded a knighthood in his native England, reports the BBC. The 44-year-old worked closely with Steve Jobs and has played a large role in creating everything from the iPhone to the iPad. The San Jose Mercury News goes so far as to say that "he more than anyone else may define the way Apple creations look and feel in the future" in the wake of Jobs' death.

"I am keenly aware that I benefit from a wonderful tradition in the UK of designing and making," said Ive, who pronounced himself humbled and grateful. "I discovered at an early age that all I've ever wanted to do is design."

All crap we never needed and do not need today. HOW MANY LIVES HAS THIS GARBAGE COST? Are the deceased, as result of texting drivers or looking at a damn iphone "knighted" as well?! OK, they got rich and lived happily ever after; except Jobs, who was alone and in misery. Good job boys. Thanks for nothing.

Almost anybody who does anything and is somehow related to Great Britain becomes a Knight these days. I see several Knights regularly and I live in Chicago, for cry-yi!
