Champ Delivers on KO Promise

Posted Dec 9, 07 10:05 AM CST in Sports

(Newser) – Floyd Mayweather Jr. defended his welterweight crown against British challenger Ricky Hatton last night in 10 rounds. The 147-pound champion showed more punching than dancing, as Hatton kept on the offensive—contrary to the predictions that the bout would be a boring one. Before an overwhelmingly British crowd, Mayweather came through on his guarantee of a knockout.

The "Hitman" wasn't connecting as solidly or as often as he might have hoped, and finally "Pretty Boy" Floyd floored him with a left hook. When Hatton struggled to his feet, Mayweather came back with a second volley, and the Brit went down again. Hatton's corner threw in the towel just as the ref called the fight for Mayweather, who later hinted at retirement.
