(Newser) – A bombing in Damascus today killed 25 and wounded dozens, report AP and al-Jazeera, but that's about where the clarity ends. The government blames "terrorists" and vows to respond with an "iron fist." The opposition, meanwhile, insists that the government staged the blast to head off a protest march and even planted evidence to make it seem like police officers made up most of the victims. A similar back-and-forth took place over explosions last month in the capital.

"It's all getting very ugly, very quickly," writes Rania Abouzeid at Time. Arab League observers, of course, were supposed to make sense of the chaos in the nation, but the still-ongoing mission has been roundly condemned as ineffectual. The League will meet Sunday in Egypt to discuss how to proceed.
