Flooding blocks roadways, strands residents

(Newser) – A deluge of heavy rain, wind, tornadoes, and nickel-sized hail is giving Houston-area residents a major headache today, the Houston Chronicle reports. A fast-moving storm front pummeled the city with winds reaching 60mph and up to 4.5 inches of rain, shutting part of Highway 288 and flooding a dozen other freeway intersections. Apparent twisters ripped roofs off of houses and garages in one residential area and damaged a mall in nearby Texas City, MSNBC reports.

No injuries have been reported, but firefighters struggled to rescue people trapped inside cars on flooded roadways, and several Richmond residents were evacuated by boat. About 19,600 Houston-area residents are without power. The area forecast offers a mixed bag, with dry weather rolling in and near-freezing temperatures descending later this week.

(NEWSER) - At least nine people are dead as a violent storm system sweeps across the Midwest, causing tornadoes, pounding rain, high winds, golf-ball-sized hail, and "dangerous lightning." "It's like nothing I've ever seen, and something I don't care to see again," says the mayor of Harrisburg, Illinois, where Reuters reports that at least six people have been killed in a twister that caused a path of destruction as wide as three or four football fields. (NEWSER) - The death toll from South Korea's massive landslides has reached 67, with at least 10 still missing, Reuters reports, and this terrifying video shows some of the destruction. In the wake of the flash flooding and mudslides, caused by the heaviest rains in a century, residents were warned to be wary of rogue explosives: Officials say about 10 landmines that were buried at a military base in Seoul during the Korean War were swept away and have not yet been recovered. Death Toll Near 270 in Southern Storms

Tornado devastates Tuscaloosa

(NEWSER) - A wave of tornado-spawning storms ripped through six states yesterday, killing at least 269 people and flattening buildings. Some 180 people died in Alabama alone, many of those in college-town Tuscaloosa, where a mile-wide tornado tore through the city's downtown, the AP reports. There were 33 casualties in Mississippi, 33 in Tennessee, 14 in Georgia, eight in Virginia, and one in Kentucky. More»

After Arkansas Tornado, One Town Is ‘Gone’

Violent storms bring month's death toll to 12 in the state

(NEWSER) - Violent storms wiped out much of a small town in Arkansas last night, destroying homes and leaving overturned tractor-trailers and dangling power lines in its wake. Officials believe a tornado hit Vilonia, a town of about 3,800 people 25 miles north of Little Rock, leaving a 3-mile-wide path of destruction. "The town's gone," one resident tells the AP . At least two people were killed in Vilonia and three more in other towns across the state, bringing April's storm-related death toll to 12. More»
