Video Games May Replace DVDs In Stores

Ars Technica sees big game sales driving shelf space decisions

(Newser) – DVD sales are slipping while video games and their tie-ins are seeing record consumption, reports Ars Technica, leading Ben Kuchera to suggest that video games will replace DVDs on many retail shelves. With even grandmothers now going Wii wild, video games are no longer just the realm of teens and young single males, he writes, despite much higher retail prices than competing DVDs.

Games are capitalizing on a physical and social dimension—users can gather in homes and bars to play games like Guitar Hero or the Nintendo Wii together. Kuchera also says the DVD high-definition format wars are turning off DVD consumers. “I think we'll see not only record-breaking revenues but record-breaking year-over-year growth when the final numbers are tallied," says one analyst of 2007 game sales.

(NEWSER) - A Japanese man pledged his undying love to a video game character last weekend, in a first-of-its-kind ceremony witnessed by dozens of gamers. The man, username Sal9000, had fallen in love with Nene Anegasaki, a virtual woman in the Nintendo DS dating simulator “Love Plus.” He “married” his digital before a real-life priest, though the priest stressed the marriage wasn’t legally binding. Some gaming websites, however, say Sal9000 earlier took Anegasaki to a chapel in Guam, where marriage laws are looser. More»

(NEWSER) - With hit games few and far between, consumers aren’t exactly fighting in the aisles to get their hands on a Wii anymore. Nintendo slashed its full year sales forecast for Wii hardware 23% yesterday, the Wall Street Journal reports, and offered little hope of a swift turnaround. “Right now, the mood is not one where people feel like they have to rush out and buy a Wii,” Nintendo president Satoru Iwata told analysts. “We need a little time for things to pick up.” More»
