The Washington Capitals took advantage of a rare night off for Martin Brodeur and held on for 3-2 win over New Jersey tonight, reports the AP. After a John Madden goal put the Devils ahead 1-0, the Caps got a power play goal from Nicklas Backstrom and took the lead for good on light-scoring Jeff Schultz's third goal this season.

Washington goalie Olaf Kolzig was not terribly busy, making 20 saves and only two in the second period. Early in the third, the Devils, trailing 3-1, had a goal by defenseman Mike Mottau disallowed after video review showed he kicked the puck in. New Jersey earned no points in the standings for the first time since Nov. 16. (More NHL stories.)
