Lana Del Rey: Sorry, Haters, I Sang Fine on SNL

Her fans get it, even if critics don't, she says

(Newser) – Lana Del Rey is back in the news with the release of her debut LP, Born to Die, and the singer tells Rolling Stone she's not a bit bothered by all the negative press she got for her recent Saturday Night Live appearance. (A video clip from the show is included in this file.) "I actually felt good about it," she says. "I thought I looked beautiful and sang fine." Lots of critics thought she was off-key and just plain awkward. "I know some people didn't like it, but that's just the way I perform, and my fans know that."

As for the new album, Rolling Stone critic Rob Sheffield isn't a fan. "Given her chic image, it's a surprise how dull, dreary and pop-starved" the album is, he writes. But at Slate, Jonah Weiner says the album gets better with every listen. He also recounts Del Rey's transformation from Lizzy Grant (her real name, under which she first performed). It hasn't been perfect, and that's part of what makes her interesting. "The fact that you can see Del Rey’s seams is, whether or not she intends it, fascinating, and may account in part for the discomfiting effect she has on listeners: She presents as a Frankenstein monster, a prototype sexbot on the fritz, a glitch in the pop matrix." I'll give her credit for ACTUALLY singing on SNL, unlike SOME "Musicians" who haven't had the balls/guts to actually get up and sing in front of a live audience. I had never heard her or even heard OF her but after that song I'm grabbing her album. How many artists today actually sing live, without vocoders and auto-tune? She reminds me of Thom Yorke in a way, like a bizarro photo negative version of him. Maybe it didn't sound exactly the same as it does on the album, I haven't heard it. But I prefer to hear a different version than what's on the album. Why would you want to hear it the exact same way? THATS what the album is for! Duh! You can tell it's a very sad song for her to sing, I bet it makes her very emotional but it also has moments of uplifting brightness that shine through where you can tell she can really belt out some amazing notes and I can't wait to hear them in the album. Haters gonna hate, thank god someone is actually being new and creative. I don't think her performance was perfect. And I think that is a good thing. Welcome to the world of REAL music. If you need EVERY note to be totally pitch perfect and care more about a catchy hook than an artistic voice and lyrical melody with heart and grit, I'm guessing you should go back to the crap you mindlessly listen to.

Link goes to the Harry Potter kid on SNL.   Do I have to watch that to see if her song is on the clip too?    Not worth it.

I actually watched it live and thought it was different and  liked it. Many songs that I love today, I could not stand the first time I heard them. She is unique, and hot!
