Media to Newt: We Can't Quit You!

Newt Gingrich said something hurtful recently. "All our friends in the news media are very excited and eager to end this race as soon as possible," he told a Florida crowd. But nothing could be further from the truth, writes Dana Milbank in the Washington Post. "You give us exactly what political journalists crave. Sure, some of us are ideologically biased, but we are far more biased in favor of conflict—and that's why we’re all in the tank for you."

"We’ve loved you since you created the modern era of politics-as-blood-sport in the House two decades ago," Milbank writes. Journalists love his pomposity, his hypocrisy, his wild superlatives. " We don't even mind your constant attacks on us … we're happy to be your foils." So please, Newt, keep your word and drag this out until the convention. "You're the only thing saving us from a long spring of despair, the only person who can … bring us the revenues we so desperately need." (More Dana Milbank stories.)
