(newser) – A devout Muslim father will appear in a Canadian court today, charged with murdering his 16-year-old daughter—allegedly over her refusal to wear a traditional headscarf, reports the London Free Press. Muhammad Parvez, a Pakistani taxi driver, called police Monday morning, saying he had killed his daughter Aqsa. The death has sparked debate about religious extremism in Canada.

Friends say Aqsa usually went to school wearing jogging pants and hijab and then changed her clothes. She fought with her parents about her curfew, rap music, and tight-fitting clothes. She was afraid of her father, they said, had spent some time in a shelter, and had been sleeping over at others' houses in recent weeks, returning Monday only to collect her things, the Globe and Mail reports. Aqsa’s brother, Waqas, 26, was charged with obstructing police, allegedly for trying to mislead officers.
