Athletics GM Billy Beane, never one to shy away from an aggressive deal, today traded his team's top pitcher, Dan Haren, to the Arizona Diamondbacks for a slew of prospects, reports the Chronicle. Beane made the move with an eye on long-term building - apparently not convinced about his club's chances in 2008. The A's also traded minor league pitcher Connor Robertson.
Arizona, coming off a playoff run, now sports a pitching rotation that includes Haren, who won 15 games and started the All-Star game in 2007, and former Cy Young Winners Brandon Webb and Randy Johnson. Haren is a bargain for the D-Backs, only earning $9.5 million over the next two seasons. His response? "I'm extremely excited."
