Look Out, Tebow: Peyton Manning Visits Broncos

QB is quickly looking for a new home

(Newser) – Talk about a marquis quarterback tandem: Newly minted free agent Peyton Manning has the football world in a tizzy today as he visits the Denver Broncos. For the football-challenged, that's the same team whose starting quarterback is one Tim Tebow. Could Manning and Tebow end up on the same team? Eh, Denver is just one of several teams Manning is likely to visit in the coming days and weeks, notes ESPN. If it does come to fruition, however, expect Tebow to be traded, notes Bleacher Report, which is already sussing out potential deals.

Don't think this is big news in Denver? Here's an example of how closely the Denver Post is covering the story, as Manning gets picked up at the airport: "Driving the SUV was Bowlen's and the Broncos' longtime assistant Fred Fleming. Fox was in the front passenger seat. Elway and Manning were in the back seat. Xanders and McCoy rode behind them."

If Manning does come to the Broncos and they trade Tebow.....that would be a big mistake on the management's part. Manning is near retirement age and he may have one maybe two seasons left due to his neck injury.

Wow. What a Houdini-like escape for Bronco GM John Elway this could be.  It seems pretty evident that Elway was blindsided (and then cornered) by Tim Tebow's "success". Early in the season, when it seemed clear that the 2-5 Broncos weren't going anywhere, Elway gave into the fans' desire to see Tebow get his shot. I bet Elway (and coach John Fox to a lesser extent) thought "The fans are nuts, this guy is a terrible QB. But they're not going to be satisfied until they see him with their own eyes. So, since the season is lost, Let's give him his shot. That way I can shut the fans up and we'll end up in position to draft Andrew Luck, the kind of QB that I want." Well, we know how that worked out. Despite his erratic play, Tebow "led" the Broncos to the playoffs.  At the end of the season Elway was REALLY screwed. Tebow was his incumbent, battle-tested, comeback-leading, playoff-game-winning starter. Elway knows it's political suicide to draft or trade for a new QB and give up on Tebow—a huge swath of the Denver fan base thinks the guy is magical.  But now? Enter Peyton Manning. Even if you think the world of Tebow, you can't think he's better than Manning. No one could complain if Denver sat Timmy down in favor of one of the greatest QBs of all time. Elway and the Broncos may escape the clutches of Tebowmania after all!

Popularity is nice, but winning super bowls is better. Both have popularity and only one can help you win a super bowl. No contest, even if it is a short term fix.
