(Newser) – The University of Southern Mississippi has apologized after members of its band recited an offensive chant at a Kansas State player during the NCAA tournament. As KSU's Angel Rodriguez approached the free-throw line, some in the band chanted, "Where's your green card?" Video of the incident was posted online, prompting angry comments. Southern Miss President Martha Saunders said the school "deeply regret(s) the remarks made by a few students."

"The words of these individuals do not represent the sentiments of our pep band, athletic department or university," she said, according to the Clarion-Ledger. "We apologize to Mr. Rodriguez and will take quick and appropriate disciplinary action." The school's interim athletic director also apologized to KSU and will meet with the band to discuss the incident, he said.

In the defense of the cheerleaders, they thought they were at a polling place and it was election day.

I was in the band (percussion section) and we did some pretty stupid sometimes offensive things. Not because of school culture or the state we were in but because we were simply dumb-ass kids. I believe incidents like this are made into much bigger deals than they really are in order not to create a civil discussion on how to improve society, but rather to further divide us along racial and cultural divides. Clearly every Latino does not need a green card and everyone from Miss is not inbred.

I lived at USM and environs for a few years. In fact was down there for Hurricane Katrina. Gas stations refused (rationing) to sell gas to any one that looked Latino. Land of hypocrites and Tort reform. In the aftermath of Katrina most were eager to get their hands on Federal Funds and they changed their tune on the Right to Sue and people like Sen. Trent Lott were all to eager to sue in court and then hire the non documented workers to fix their roofs!  Come to think of it most of the school band and orchestra were from Mexico, Central and South America probably children of Latin oligarchs.
