I Am Legend rocked the box office for $76.5 million this weekend, the highest gross for a December pic ever, Variety reports. Twentieth Century Fox also surprised with Alvin and the Chipmunks, which scored $45 million, second ever for G- or PG-rated December debuts. Together they boosted a sluggish box office with a 37% spike over this weekend last year.

Filling out the top five were New Line's The Golden Compass, which fell 65% from last week to bank $9 million; Disney's Enchanted, which dropped 44% and earned $6 million; and No Country for Old Men, which jumped up to fifth spot with $3 million, a 27% dip. (More box office stories.)
