Lieberman to Back McCain

Posted Dec 17, 07 5:41 AM CST in Politics

(Newser) – Democratic Connecticut senator and one-time vice presidential nominee Joe Lieberman is expected today to announce his support of Republican presidential hopeful John McCain, reports the Washington Post. The newly "Independent Democrat" agrees with McCain's hawkish Iraq stance, and his backing is thought to hold some sway with moderate and independent voters in the primaries.

For Lieberman, this endorsement marks another step away from the Democratic Party, which dropped him from the Connecticut ticket in 2006 because of his Iraq views. Lieberman's win as an independent was helped along by his old friend McCain. "There is no doubt that he is more closely aligned to McCain than anyone running for president," said a campaign spokesman.
