(Newser) – Soft rock singer-songwriter Dan Fogelberg died yesterday morning at his home in Maine after a three-year battle with prostate cancer. He was 56. Fogelberg was most popular in the '70s and early '80s with hits like "Longer," "Leader of the Band," "Same Old Lang Syne," and "The Power of Gold." His songs were known for their emotional weight and captivating story lines.

Fogelberg died with his wife, Jean, by his side. "He fought a brave battle and died peacefully at home," said a statement on his Facebook site. After being diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer in 2004, Fogelberg began urging others to get tested.
