Royal watchers were rewarded today with a report in the News of the World  that  Queen Elizabeth was behind the sudden split between Prince William and his commoner girlfriend, Kate Middleton. The tab said Wills dumped Kate after a closed-door meeting with his grandmother, who said she didn't "want another Diana."

Prince Philip was reported telling the chap to make a decision because "you can't string her along forever." Meanwhile, the competing tabs aren't having any of it: The Daily Mail says the decision was William's alone, quoting a source who says the Queen "would never dream of interfering." The Sun says it was over when Kate—who wanted commitment—called the question. (More Prince William stories.)
