At least 41 people were killed early today when the Karachi Express derailed, and Pakistani rescue workers were scrambling to pull survivors from the twisted wreckage, CNN reports. Over 135 people were injured when 12 of the train's 17 cars overturned. Over a thousand people were on the train, many of them heading home for the Eid holiday.

Many more passengers are feared trapped in the wreckage 250 miles north of Karachi. "There are cries for help. Policemen pulling out the dead and injured are drenched in blood," said a local officer. Officials are investigating the cause of the crash, but a railroad official said the derailment appeared to be an accident. (More Pakistan stories.)
