North Korea: We Could Defeat US In 'Single Blow' Top military official boasts of 'powerful modern weapons' By Kevin Spak, Newser Staff Posted Apr 25, 2012 5:06 AM CDT 24 comments Comments Kim Jong Un, right, smiles with the Korean People's Army senior officers, Choe Ryong Hae, center, and Ri Yong Ho, during a mass military parade in Kim Il Sung Square, April 15, 2012. (AP Photo/Korean Central News Agency via Korea News Service) (Newser) – If bluster were power, North Korea would have taken over the world this week—and today it's boasting that it could pretty much do just that. One of the nation's top military officials today bragged that his nation "is armed with powerful modern weapons" that "can defeat the (US) imperialists at a single blow," the AP reports. Ri Yong Ho, the chief of the army's General Staff, did not elaborate on precisely which weapons he meant, but in light of this month's failed rocket launch, it seems likely they are imaginary. It was the latest salvo in a bravado campaign by North Korea; in addition to the much-condemned rocket launch, it recently promised to reduce South Korean targets "to ashes," threatened to retaliate against US sanctions, and revealed that it was working on a new nuclear weapons test.
