(Newser) – Jaymisha Pires and Corey Granberry, both 21, were visiting the San Diego grave of Granberry's godson on Saturday when they saw a woman with her clothes covered in blood asking for help. She led them to her husband, 30-year-old Joseph Ramirez, who was allegedly holding their three children hostage at his uncle's grave. Pires saw Ramirez slashing at his 8-year-old son's arms with glass, apparently broken off from candles he had brought to the cemetery.

Ramirez said he had been hearing his dead grandmother's voice in his head, telling him to sacrifice his son, and he was repeating, "We're going to Jesus" when Pires and Granberry found him. "My motherly instincts kicked in when I saw him hurting that little boy," Pires tells the San Diego Union-Tribune. Granberry managed to get the other two children, both girls, a safe distance away, and Pires eventually convinced Ramirez to let the boy go, NBC San Diego reports. Granberry—a medical assistant—wrapped a shirt around his arm. Ramirez was tackled by a security guard after running away and was later taken to a hospital; he will be charged with child abuse and assault with a deadly weapon. His son was being treated at a nearby hospital, KGTV reports.

As usual the angry atheist mob can't resist an opportunity to spittle-fleck their screens again. Don't bother responding to this either. I won't read your expletive-laden replies.

It's obviously laudable that this woman stepped in to stop the attack, but I'm not sure about 'motherly instincts'. If many of us had been in the same situation, it may have been more like 'stopping a child from being murdered' instincts.

What wonderful young women to jump in and challenge this man and save the child. It warms my heart. There is so little good news these days. That these young women averted a tragedy should be recognized.
