(Newser) – Sen. Jay Rockefeller has stepped up his efforts to find out if Rupert Murdoch's News Corp broke American laws in the British phone-hacking scandal. The West Virginia Democrat, chair of the Senate Commerce Committee, has asked Lord Leveson, head of the British inquiry into the scandal, to turn over any evidence that News Corp or News International employees broke US laws by bribing foreign officials or tapping phones in the US, reports the Washington Post.

"In a democratic society, members of the media have the freedom to aggressively probe their government's activities and expose wrongdoing. But, like all other citizens, they also have a duty to obey the law," Rockefeller wrote in a letter to Leveson. "Evidence that is already in the public record clearly shows that for many years, News International had a widespread, institutional disregard for these laws." The committee the senator chairs has the power to set up official hearings into the scandal.

I don't care how old Rupert is, he needs to be prosecuted. Instead of putting him in prison, he needs to lose all his broadcast licenses, because it is illegal for a criminal to own a radio or TV station license. Then, he needs to be fined so heavily that he will have to live like half of Americans, in poverty, because his repiublican friends he bought congressional seats, governorships, etc. have done their best to put the middle class into poverty. Then, when the US is done with him, send him to Australia. They have an Income Tax evasion indictment waiting for him, and then let the U.K. haul him into court. Well, I got that off my chest. I think we all know that when you are as rich as Murdoch, or Rush Limbaugh, or Dick Cheney, you can get away with murder and will very likely never receive so much as a slap on the wrist. It felt good to envision him having to pay at least something for the GREAT HARM he and his "NEWS" networks have done to this country. Rupert is a modern day "Mr, Potter" from "It's a wonderful life."  After stealing $8,000 from James Stewarts "Uncle Billy", his "compassionate conservative nature" leads Mr. Potter to do what he thinks is right. He calls the police and blames Jimmy Stewart for embezzling.  Ahh, Rupert, your ehtics and mindset, and insatiable greed are terrible things, but evidently you are an atheist. Otherwise, at your age, you would be on your knees begging for forgiveness for all your misdeeds toward your fellow man. If you beleived in any god besides the Almighty dollar, you would be "cramming for your finals."   The late Lee Atwater, who was an early full time hack on Fox "news" died of cancer in his 30's, but before he died, he begged for forgiveness for the nasty political campaigns he ran against democrats, including the "Willie Horton" race baitng ad against Michael Dukakis, which elected George Bush 1. I'm not so sure that Murdoch really cares about who gets elected, as long as he pays no taxes, and he can make Billions of dollars by spreading hate and division which is thinly veiled as "News." Yellow journalism has always been a big money maker, and that's really what Murdoch, and Limbaugh, and hate radio are all about.
